Early Childhood Texas: Resources for Raising Kids

Texas Child Care Connection

Licensed Child Care Centers and Licensed/Registered Child Care Homes that meet high quality standards are recognized as participating in the Texas Rising Star Program.  Programs with 4 stars are the highest quality.

High quality child care has both short and long term benefits for children and families.  The components of high quality care include:

  • Smaller class sizes and more teachers;
  • Teachers with higher education and ongoing training;
  • Positive and patient teachers;
  • Age-appropriate activities and quality curriculum;
  • Indoor and outdoor classrooms that help with learning and development;
  • Support for learning at home; and
  • Community resources for families.

In Texas, high quality child care programs are designated with a Texas Rising Star 4 Star rating, and/or NAEYC accreditation.  For more information: What to Look for In a Program

In Texas, the State Department of Health and Human Services Department regulates child care based on the physical setting.  Licensed and Registered Child Care Homes provide care for up to 12 children in the caregivers home.  Like child care centers, these homes must meet minimum health and safety standards and are regularly monitored by Child Care Regulations. There are also Listed Family Homes for up to 3 unrelated children. Learn more about them here:
